President's
Evening and the weekend of 1-3 June 2007
For
President's evening we were joined by members of the
Rotary Club of Charleroi. Guy and Marie-Claire Regnier
and Charles Francotte took advantage of RyanAir's re-opened
route from Charleroi to Stansted. They were hosted by
Bernie and Diana Everitt and Tony Pritchard. On the
Saturday, they visited the Peldon Rose for lunch. They
are pictured below contemplating the menu. After lunch
a pleasant afternoon was spent at Beth Chatto's Gardens,
before retiring to the Waggon& Horses at Great Yeldham
for dinner. On the Sunday morning our visitors were
joined by Club members at the Vice-President's house
for lunch before returning to Stansted and hence Charleroi.

Ambassadorial
Scholar
During
2005/6 we hosted Saori Sarawaga
a
22 year old from Northern Japan who completed her studies in linguistics at Essex University.
Read Saori's first report here. Saori
is pictured in traditional Japanese costume and also
receiving some farewell gifts before returning to Japan.

Noemi Abrus
Each year between 1995 ad
1999 inclusive, Bourne Rotary Club took a number of lorries packed with relief
materials to refugee camps in Hungary. Braintree and Bocking Rotary Club
supported this initiative. The lorry drivers were drawn from Rotary Clubs. Bob
Greybrook from Braintree and Bocking was one of the lorry drivers. None of the
drivers spoke Hungarian, so on their first visit they were very pleased to meet a 14 year old girl,
Noemi Abrus, who spoke English and was prepared to interpret for them and even,
despite her tender years, to take control of the refugees when order was
required. Noemi would like to visit the Rotary Clubs who supported this initiatve
to say a personal ‘thank
you’ to all those who helped the Hungarian refugees and this will hopefully be
arranged shortly with funding from the Rotary Clubs involved.
Aquaboxes
The International Committee has decided that during the course of the year,
we will continue to raise funds for one of the emergency box schemes.
The Aquabox
contains a water carrier and purification Kit (28 days supply), sanitary and
hygiene essentials, cooking and eating utensils, babywear, tools for repair of
homes or construction of temporary accommodation, waterproof cover and
emergency sleeping bags.
The gift of
aid goes in two by two

At the third attempt
it's safely packed. Just! As you see, the nappies’ first use is to protect
the contents.

And finally, persuade the previous
Internainal Chairman's Grandchildren to donate their favourite
toy.
What
is an Ambassadorial Scholar?
The purpose of the Ambassadorial
Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly
relations among people of different countries. The program sponsors several
types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for
qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars
serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give
presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon
returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that
led to greater understanding of their host countries.
